λ Laesi
About

Why Laesi exists.

Because nobody was building the reader app for the languages we actually wanted to read.

Laesi is built by a professional language teacher — someone who learned several closely related languages to fluency as an adult, and has studied many more. After more than 5,000 hours inside other reading apps, the same frustration kept surfacing: the languages worth reading were either missing, or supported as second-class citizens with weak lemmatization and nothing to read.

So Laesi began as a passion project — something like Calibre for language learners. A local-first reader that keeps your vocabulary in your own database, looks words up, and — the part that actually matters — runs real morphological analysis, so every inflected form collapses back to the word you already learned instead of cluttering your list.

Meanwhile, the academic and language-technology communities had quietly built extraordinary morphological analyzers — Voikko for Finnish, spaCy across the modern European languages, GiellaLT for the Sámi languages, Faroese, Kalaallisut and more — and none of them plugged into a reader anyone could actually use. Laesi is the reader they plug into. It grew from a handful of Nordic and Uralic languages into 60+, but the underserved ones are still the reason it exists.

A note on honesty: I know one corner of the world's languages well — the Nordic, Sámi, Celtic, and their neighbours — and I'm not an expert on every language on the planet. If Laesi handles a language you know badly, or if I've used the wrong name for yours, I want to hear it. That goes double for indigenous and minority languages, where I'd far rather be corrected than presumptuous.

Laesi is not a venture-scale play, and it isn't trying to be. It won't out-publish the big content libraries — it doesn't need to. It will stay a small, independent tool serving a small and passionate community, at a fair one-time price, for as long as people want to read.

What we believe

You should own your software.

You pay once, you download it, it's yours. No subscription that keeps running after you stop using it. No server we can turn off that breaks your workflow.

Niche focus is a feature, not a limitation.

We won't out-publish the big apps for Spanish, and we don't need to. We cover the Nordic, Celtic, Uralic, and historical languages other readers ignore — and we support the mainstream ones just as fully, for learners who'd rather own their tools and their data.

Your data belongs to you.

Plain SQLite on your own disk. Always exportable. Never sent to a server, never sold, never used to train anything.

Reading is the method.

No streaks. No XP. No gamification. Serious learners read real books. Laesi makes that easier, not flashier.
