Why Laesi for Norwegian Bokmål?

What the big apps miss

01

Works out of the box

The nb_core_news_sm spaCy model handles Norwegian Bokmål morphology well. Drop in an EPUB and Laesi highlights by knowledge level immediately.

02

Handles Norwegian compound nouns

Norwegian loves stacking words, utenriksminister, trafikklysrapport. The spaCy model lemmatizes a compound like any other word, so utenriksministeren ties back to utenriksminister, but each form you meet still carries its own level.

03

The gateway to Nynorsk, Danish, and Swedish

Bokmål sits at the center of continental Scandinavian mutual intelligibility. Your vocabulary transfers, partially, to the others, all of which Laesi also supports.

What to read in Norwegian Bokmål

Norwegian has two written standards and no spoken one. Bokmål is what roughly nine writers in ten reach for, and it grew out of the Danish that was written in Norway for four centuries. Nobody speaks it. Norwegians speak the dialect they grew up with, on national television included, and then write Bokmål or Nynorsk. The gap between the page and the audiobook is therefore wider here than in Swedish or Danish.

Then there is påskekrim. On the Saturday before Palm Sunday in 1923, Gyldendal ran the words Bergenstoget plyndret inat across the front page of Aftenposten in headline type, with the pen name in small print beneath. Readers phoned the paper and the state railways to ask after relatives. It was an advertisement for a novel, the print run sold out, and a hundred years later Norwegian publishers still release their crime in spring and the country still reads it in the mountains at Easter.

Folk og røvere i Kardemomme by ↗ · When the Robbers Came to Cardamom Town Audiobook

Norske folkeeventyr ↗ · Norwegian Folktales
Asbjørnsen og Moe

Trolls, three brothers, and a youngest son who wins by picking things up off the road. Asbjørnsen and Moe collected these in the 1840s rather than writing them, and the repetitions of oral telling make them easy to follow.

Odinsbarn ↗ · Odin's Child
Siri Pettersen

Hirka is fifteen when she learns she has no tail, which in her world means she is not from it. First of the Norse-rooted Ravneringene trilogy. Long, but the sentences are plain.

A man buries his father, moves into the forest above Oslo and lives on elk milk with a moose calf for company. Loe's flat declarative sentences make him the easiest adult novelist here.

Jon Iver Helgaker and Jonas Torgersen

Ninth-century villagers with twenty-first-century management problems. Every scene was filmed twice, once in Norwegian and once in English, so the two versions are a parallel text with faces attached.

Skam ↗ · Shame
Julie Andem

An NRK teen drama released in real time, clip by clip, and remade in seven countries. Fast, slangy, unscripted-sounding Oslo teenage speech, so one of the harder things here.

A Netflix series. A teenager in a Western Norwegian town turns out to be carrying something older than he is, and so does the industry poisoning the fjord. Some spoken Old Norse turns up.
